What is the tradathon about?
Trad climbing is arguably the most rewarding form of rock climbing. The beauty of trad is the amazing depth and breadth of experience that it offers. You are also not limited to hard grades to do something “worthwhile” and there is always the opportunity for new routing or any level of adventure which you choose.
And yet, trad does not have a large following. This is due, in part, to the cost of the additional gear, but probably more due to the perceived risk that is involved and the lack of opportunities for adequate coaching for beginners. Before the arrival of sport climbing, all climbers did an “apprenticeship” during which they learned the ropes under the practiced eye of a more experienced climber. Bolting has made climbing much more accessible and caused the climbing community to grow at a much faster rate than this traditional apprenticeship model can cope. So – trad often remains inaccessible.
So this is your opportunity – a gathering of all levels of climbers to share their skills, to learn from each other, and enjoy a weekend at the crag.

The Crag:
The Eastern Cape may feel a bit far out, but we are convinced that the long journey is well worth it for the extremely unique trad climbing at Morgan bay. Waves crash at the base of the featured, cracked dolerite set on a shale band. Morgan Bay is the largest sea cliff climbing area in South Africa. There are 638 trad lines & 7 sport lines. The crags are accessed from above and some of the routes start right at the sea level. Not only is this venue incredibly unique but it also offers great climbing on incredible rock. Morgan Bay climbing is the closest thing we have to Gritstone climbing in South Africa!
For a full breakdown of the crag have a look at the very comprehensive free digital guidebook below.
