These are the best shoes BD has made yet!

I have been wearing my Mission XPs for two and a half months now… and it seems that it’s time to give my verdict! Yes, I work for BD SA but I would say that I am hyper-critical about the gear I choose to wear (especially when it comes to footwear). The Mission XPs are the best shoes BD has made so far due to how well it hugs the heel, edges and how durable the upper is. I have done loads of walking to and from crags all over CPT and KZN in my Missions and I find myself wearing them to work far too regularly (carpet destroys rubber).

They are ultra-sticky and you need to have no fear of slipping on dry granite or wet sandstone. The uppers are easy to clean – all it takes is a brush a cloth and some Nikwax. In fact, after some Nubuck & Suede Proof, I found the leather to be pretty water-resistant.

My only comment is that due to BD being new to the footwear game they have not yet optimised their outsole for as much endurance as one would expect from this price of the shoe. (but it is really grippy) And my midsole will likely collapse within the next 6 months.

In conclusion, these are the best shoes that BD has made thus far, but, they are far from the best shoe BD will ever make.

Many a climber has experienced the dreaded “swamp foot” in Badkloof, Montagu. Usually due to slippy in on the muddy terrain, a wet sandbag, or slippery rock. For the people wearing tekkies or other synthetic material shoes, you have a dreaded time ahead of you to clean, especially in the mesh bits…

The Mission XP Leather shoes I found are the perfect shoe for Montagu mission with the ability to hike to Yellowwood Amphitheatre due to its rugged design. Their rubber is great to stick on rocks, not too hard or too soft. The lugs at the bottom are well designed and grip better than my La Sportiva Men’s TX4 approach shoes in Badkloof conditions, especially for the mud and slippery sandbags!

I chose these shoes above the BD Technicians due to them being a bit wider at the toes and the lace holes are designed to be more durable. The tongue is sealed so small little rocks won’t find their way into your shoe that easily (similar to the Technician). The toe box is covered more compared to other shoes, so it’s highly guarded against hole forming on the side (which is a major problem with most shoes!).

I had the La Sportiva Men’s TX4 approach shoes before this BD Mission XP Leather, and I would highly recommend these Missions to any avid climber!
